Elliot's Story

Elliot and Cora

Living with eczema has definitely had its challenges, but I’ve always tried not to let it hold me back from doing the things I love. One of my favourite things is swimming in the sea—but anyone who’s taken a dip during an active flare-up will know it’s like doing a full-body exfoliation with chilli flakes... and regret.

Growing up, my grandparents had a beach house we visited often. Not wanting to miss out, I’d charge into the waves with my siblings—only to come running out minutes later in tears, screaming, and questioning all my life choices. (I’m one of six siblings, and interestingly, most of us have developed some form of skin condition—whether it’s eczema or psoriasis. Genetics really said, “Let’s share!”)

Throughout my childhood, teens, and early adult life, I didn’t put much time or effort into understanding how to properly care for my eczema. I certainly didn’t have a management plan—unless you count “ignore it and hope for the best.” But now that I’m a bit older (and hopefully a bit wiser), I’ve come to appreciate the importance of listening to my body, understanding my skin, and finding what works for me.

This has become even more important now that I have two kids with eczema. My daughter, in particular, has had a rough time. I have to credit my amazing wife—she’s researched every treatment under the sun (and moon) to find something that works for our family. A big shout-out to the EANZ as well, for answering her calls and offering reassurance when we needed it most.

We’ve had many restless nights and some incredibly stressful visits to the doctor, but we now feel like we understand her skin well enough to manage it. And that’s a huge win!

That would be my message to anyone currently struggling with eczema: although it can feel overwhelming—like you’re drowning in moisturiser and still somehow dry—there is light at the end of the tunnel. Just like me, and now my daughter, you will find something that works. Even if it takes trying every lotion, potion, and old wives’ tale remedy out there, there is a solution for you.

Kia kaha.
