What Is Oat Milk?

Oat milk is a plant-based milk alternative made by soaking and blending oats with water. It has a light, creamy texture and a mild flavour that works well in drinks, breakfast dishes, baking and cooking.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rolled oats

  • 4 cups water

  • 1 tablespoon honey, maple syrup, sugar or your preferred sweetener

Method

  1. Place the rolled oats in a large bowl and add the water. Cover the bowl and allow the oats to soak for 24 hours.

  2. Transfer the oats and soaking liquid to a blender or food processor. Blend until the mixture is smooth.

  3. Line a colander or fine-mesh strainer with cheesecloth and strain the oat mixture into a clean bowl or jug.

  4. Strain the mixture a second time into a clean, well-sealed container to create a smoother consistency.

  5. Stir through your preferred sweetener and seal the container.

  6. Store the oat milk in the refrigerator and use within five days. Shake well before serving, as some natural separation may occur.

Serving Suggestions

  • Pour over cereal, muesli or granola.

  • Add to coffee, tea, smoothies or hot chocolate.

  • Use in baking, pancakes or desserts.

  • Add to creamy soups, sauces or other savoury dishes.

  • Serve chilled as a refreshing dairy-free drink.

Recipe Note

For the smoothest oat milk, strain the mixture twice and avoid over-blending, as this can create a thicker or slightly slimy texture. Use certified gluten-free rolled oats when preparing the recipe for someone who needs to avoid gluten.

Honey should not be given to children under 12 months of age. Maple syrup or sugar can be used instead.
